Arthropods: Earths most abundant creatures – a haiku

By: Marcia Beckford

Jobs:
Earths most abundant creatures.
They’re called arthropods.
Who pollinate, recycle.

They’re plentiful in our world
Decomposes clean.
Restore nutrients to the soil.

Earth’s most abundant creatures.
Predators and prey.
Participants in food web.

Description:
All have exoskeleton.
A hard shell outside.
Serves as protection and house

Segmented bodies in parts.
Similar to us
A head, a neck, a torso

Those jointed appendages,
Mean elbows, knees flex
When walking and grabbing.

Fusion of head and thorax
Cephalothorax
For arachnids, crustaceans.

Exceptions:
The horseshoe crab with ten legs
Is an anomaly
Of those labeled arachnids.

Clarification:
Some miscount the scorpion’s claws
Placement on their head
Leaves an eight leg count

Location:
Subterranean, terrestrial
Aquatic, aerial
Arthropods are everywhere
